It cannot be denied that volleyball matches are always exciting and often a real spectacle – but the discipline is not a sport of the masses and mainstream. Another important aspect of this sport is not known to most people: volleyball is also great for sports betting . The betting options are also diverse in volleyball. Many people not only bet on the major volleyball championships, such as the European Volleyball Championship or the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, but also on the most important national leagues in Finland, Germany, Poland, the Philippines and Russia.

In this guide on the best volleyball betting strategies, we will first cover in detail what makes this sport so special and in which tournaments the players show their skills. We will then look at the most popular volleyball bets and the most effective betting strategies.

The basics of volleyball

The inventor of volleyball is called William G. Morgan, who invented the game in 1895. Incidentally, the birthplace of the new sport was Springfield College in Massachusetts, where James Naismith invented basketball just a few years earlier . When Morgan saw the growing success of basketball with his own eyes, he devised volleyball as a “less strenuous” version of basketball that was ideal for the elderly. Originally volleyball was also called “Mintonette”, but due to the characteristics of the game, “volleyball” soon emerged as the more appropriate name.

Nowadays volleyball is a popular sport in numerous countries around the world, especially in Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands, large parts of Eastern Europe, Russia, China and the USA.

Volleyball is, of course, a team sport where two teams compete against each other and try to score points by getting the ball to hit the opposing team’s ground. However, different variants of the game are played professionally these days. The two most important variants are traditional indoor volleyball, which is usually played on a hard surface, and beach volleyball, which, as the name suggests, is played on a clay court.

The differences between indoor volleyball and beach volleyball

Indoor beach volleyball

Volleyball Olympics

The most important and prestigious volleyball competitions take place every four years at the Summer Olympics, with both women and men having an indoor and a beach tournament.

Indoor volleyball has been a fixture at the summer games since the Olympic Games in 1964. Traditionally, Brazil, the former Soviet Union and the USA dominated the men’s competition, while the women from China and Cuba won the most tournaments. In the more recent tournament history, the women from Brazil were also able to draw attention to themselves, because they won the tournament in 2008 and 2012.

The sand variant of volleyball was only able to develop into an Olympic discipline in Atlanta in 1996, but has since enjoyed great popularity. Brazil and the US dominate beach volleyball competitions of both sexes, with these two countries claiming a total of 9 of the 12 gold medals by 2016.

There is also no shortage of international volleyball tournaments outside of the Olympic Games, which take place all over the world. The umbrella organization of the sport called Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) organizes most of these competitions, including the World Cup, which takes place every four years (always between the Olympic years) and is open to 24 teams, and the World Cup, in which the 12 best teams take part and which also takes place every four years (most recently in 2019). The tournaments and competitions of “world rank” do not have an end here: In the last remaining free year, the even more exclusive so-called World Grand Champions Cup takes place, in which only six teams can take part.

In most countries around the world there are now professional volleyball leagues, whose teams can qualify there for regional, continental or global events. In Europe, for example, there is the European Volleyball Championship, in Africa and Asia the teams compete in the Club Championship and in South America there is the South American Volleyball Club Championship.

The Club World Championship consists of a total of eight teams in both the men’s and women’s competitions, with the respective winners of the continental competitions being fixed, as well as the team at the venue, a nominated team from North America and a team that is nominated by means of a wild card. The men’s tournament was dominated by the Italians for many years, with Italian teams winning the first eight events. The dominance of the Ragazzi only came to an end when the Brazilian Sada Cruzeiro stepped on the scene in the following years. In addition, some Russian teams drew attention to themselves. In 2018, however, the title went back to Italy, namely in the form of the 5th triumph for Trentino.

In the women’s competition, things are much more unpredictable. For a long time, no team was able to achieve the title in two consecutive years – until Eczacibasi Vitra set an example in 2016. Turkish teams have also caused a sensation in the past few years, winning a total of six out of nine titles between 2010 and 2018. However, the Italians and Brazilians are always hot on their heels, as is Rabita Baku from Azerbaijan.

Beach volleyball tournaments are less complicated: there are three major international tournaments for men and women, the Olympic Games, the World Championship and the World Tour.

Popular volleyball sports betting

Volleyball betting odds

This type of bet is available for all major indoor volleyball and beach volleyball tournaments around the world – the perfect option to add even more excitement to a game.

Betting tips for volleyball betting

Volleyball betting

Which volleyball bet is the best? Well, always the one who wins … This is of course just a little shame on our part. But seriously: To help you create your own betting strategy, we have put together a list of tips and tricks that will lead you to success with relative certainty. Of course, there is no rule that always leads to victory one hundred percent. But if you take our volleyball betting strategies to heart, you can at least optimize your betting activities.

Research, research, research

The most important tip for successful sports betting is actually quite simple – because everyone can guarantee that everyone can implement it. When placing a volleyball bet, the most important thing is to research the content of your own bet down to the smallest detail.

Sports betting has a decisive advantage over casino games: It is not just a matter of luck, but of the performance and decisions of flesh and blood people. And as unpredictable as people are sometimes – they are always more predictable than pure coincidence. So the more you know about a team, a coach, a sport, etc., the easier it is to react to certain situations or certain opponents.

As with any game, there are numerous factors that can affect a volleyball game. If the players have only recently become teammates and therefore not yet trained, this can be a particularly big challenge. Alternatively, a debilitating tournament schedule, chronic injury, or short-term illness can affect a team’s chances . On the other hand, a new partnership can also stimulate completely new playful heights, for example at the Olympic Games in 2012, when Alison Cerutti only won silver with Emanuel Rego, but four years later won gold with Bruno Oscar Schmidt in the team.

So what is the best way to do extensive, in-depth volleyball research? At the beginning of every research there is of course the decision to devote yourself entirely to one sport and watch as many matches as possible. It never hurts to get an in-depth understanding of the sport and all of the possible scenarios through it. Accordingly, it doesn’t hurt to follow the results of many games, even if you don’t see them in full. If you really immerse yourself in a sport and follow the various tournaments over a longer period of time, you are more likely to be able to make correct predictions about future matches later.

Learn more about volleyball statistics

Even if you personally don’t have time to follow all volleyball matches live, it definitely pays off to at least keep an overview of the results to get an impression of the larger patterns that exist in this sport. In addition, the tournament statistics of the various teams reveal what strengths and weaknesses the teams have. If, for example, a team with a traditionally strong serve competes against a team that has a hard time fending off a serve and playing back, one can assume that the strong serving team will dominate the course of the game – regardless of the individual results of past matches and tournaments.

In the age of the internet there is no longer an information emergency – and that of course also applies to sports betting. So, take advantage of the information gathering technology you have at your disposal and try to identify meaningful patterns that others may not have noticed. In the case of men’s beach volleyball at the Olympic Games, for example, no team has yet managed to defend the gold medal. Here we can derive the assumption that the last winner might go into the tournament as a favorite, but given the information above, it probably pays too little.

On the other hand, it is also easy to identify unexpected patterns or even anomalies if one combines long-term statistics with the information from viewed matches. If a team is on a long winning streak and this is clearly reflected in the statistics, the odds are likely to be poor. If you have already seen a few games by this team and found that there was a lot of luck in it that conceals weaknesses in the game, it can pay off to bet against this team once.

How about live betting?

It is thanks to the existence of so-called live bets or in-play bets that you can still place bets after the volleyball match has already started. So if you’re a keen volleyball spectator anyway, you can still place bets on the game while it goes on in front of your eyes. This can not only be extremely exciting, but also has the advantage that you can identify patterns and characteristics directly in the game if they are just emerging.

Live betting is ideal for sports betting fans who are very knowledgeable about the subject, can identify patterns immediately and can foresee how these things will affect the outcome of the game. Of course, there is no shortage of live betting at Mr Green, most of which are game outcome related. At larger events, however, there are sometimes live bets on set handicaps and the winners of the next set.

Remember: favorites sometimes lose too

The whole sports betting industry suffers from a common phenomenon that affects all sports equally: the most famous or popular teams get odds that are simply too low to make sense. While some teams are naturally predestined to dominate a sport, it is a misconception that they would actually always win. As soon as people start to regard certain teams as guaranteed winners, the bookmakers move on to cut the odds sharply in order to keep their losses low, if these teams actually meet the expectation of victory.

A perfect example of this fact comes from 2013, when everyone assumed that Trentino would win the Club World Championship for the fifth time in a row – and the team was also a massive favorite in the betting markets, with correspondingly low odds. To everyone’s surprise, the team struggled throughout the tournament and was finally beaten easily by the team from Novosibirsk with 3-1 in the semifinals, which in turn could not defend itself against Sada in the final.

In such cases, bettors with the necessary research or a good instinct have a lucrative opportunity: It can happen that bets on underdog teams with good odds lose more often, but in the end you still win more than with many won bets with miserable ones Odds.

Away with the rose-colored glasses

In connection with the last section, there is another tip to keep in mind for successful betting: fans of a particular team should be careful with betting on that team. While as a fan you are of course well informed and know the characteristics of the team inside out, there is also the risk that you will lose sight of weaknesses out of sheer enthusiasm and therefore not place the most promising bets. Of course, there is always the chance that your own team will win. However, you should always look at a potential bet objectively and not judge your own favorite team better than it is with rose-colored glasses on your eyes. It is better to keep emotions out in volleyball sports betting.

Listen to your gut instinct

Our gut feeling and our intuition are powerful sensors that can be very meaningful. Sometimes the gut is right and sometimes it is not – but usually there are always good reasons for a specific gut feeling, even if you cannot always identify it exactly.

With sufficient preparation, you can firmly anchor solid knowledge about the sport of volleyball and information about the latest statistics in your own memory. Then you will quickly develop a natural instinct as to which bets have great potential.

We have already mentioned one of these cases, namely when a team has an unbelievable winning streak, but after watching the games you have come to the conclusion that there is more luck than skill involved, you should definitely trust your gut instinct and with the You can also bet against this team in the upcoming matches.

First comes the prediction, then the bet

While it makes sense to choose bets that offer good odds, you should never bet based on the odds alone and hope that your tip will become a reality. Instead, do your research first, consider what scenarios you think are likely, and then begin to find the best odds for your guesses.

If you let the tempting odds obscure your objective assessment, you will destroy all valuable results of your research and ignore your general knowledge of the sport. Sure, it is often worthwhile to keep your eyes open in search of good odds – but you should always make sure that your common sense agrees with the bet.

Never run after losses

There is one rule of thumb you must never ignore when betting: Never try to make up for your losses – and that applies to both sports betting and casino games . Even if you have lost 10 bets in a row, this fact does not affect your next bet at all.

Never bet more than you can and will afford to lose! Sure, we all bet with the aim of winning and, in the best of cases, winning a lot. But let’s face it: not all bets win. And in the event that you lose a bet, make sure that you do not feel the loss too badly. We can only emphasize once again that this tip is the most important tip of all. For the same reason, you should never increase your bet size to make up for previous losses – this is a dangerous path that Mr Green strongly recommends.

You should see betting – especially on sporting events – as a kind of entertainment that can also cost money. Get the tension going, cheer up whether your bet on a volleyball game will win or lose and calmly celebrate your winnings – but at the same time make sure that a losing bet does not affect your life.

This is how you get more for your bet

Getting more for your own money – no sports betting fan can resist that. Sometimes that means identifying the best odds. In the case of sports betting at Mr Green, however, it also means benefiting from a variety of bonus promotions and offers on the latest volleyball events in order to massively increase the value of your bets.
