History of Poker

Anyone who has ever set foot in a casino, watched a James Bond film, or even held a deck of cards will likely be aware of the game of poker. Poker is one of the oldest and most enduring card games in the history of the world, with a 500-year pedigree that has culminated in it becoming one of the most widely followed games ever.

The earliest forms of the game are believed to have originated in 15th century France, where the 52-card deck game of skill known as Poque became all the rage among the French nobility. This soon made its way across the Channel to England, where the game took on the name ‘Brag’, owing to the importance of bluffing for success.

Poker really came into its own when it crossed the Atlantic and landed in the United States, where it spread along the Mississippi River in farming and mining communities, before becoming a staple in the dusty towns of the Wild West.

By the time the 20th century rolled around, poker tournaments had begun to spring up across the country and into Canada, where massive audiences followed poker tournaments with multi-million-dollar prizes. Today, thanks to digital technology, anyone can play all variations of poker, exactly how they want to play.

The Mr Green Poker Guide

The Basics

Poker is a game that requires a unique combination of luck and skill in order to win. Your goal is to build a winning hand and bluff your way to the prize pot, picking off your opponents and beating out whoever stays at the table. In a nutshell, the dealer will shuffle the 52-card deck and deal out the cards, with each player trying to make the strongest hand with the cards available.

The goal is to up the ante and raise the stakes with each round of betting, mixing, and matching with the community cards in the middle of the table until you can build a winning hand. Although the rules vary in different poker variants, these are the essential poker rules to keep in mind.

Winning Poker Hands

Let’s take a look at some of the winning poker hands that you can use to claim your jackpot prize:

  • Royal Flush: The highest possible hand in all forms of poker, consisting of an ace, king, jack, queen, and 10, all of the same suit.
  • Straight Flush: Five cards in a sequence all of the same suit, such as two, three, four, five, and six of diamonds.
  • Four of a Kind: Four cards of the exact same value, such as four jacks.
  • Full House: a pair of cards (such as two 3s) plus three of a kind (such as three 4s).
  • Flush: Any five cards of the same suit, but not necessarily in any order.
  • Straight: Five cards in a sequence of any combinations of suits.
  • Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same value (such as three 7s).
  • Two Pair: two pairs of cards in the same hand.
  • Pair: a pair of cards of the same value.
  • High Card: if you do not have a winning hand, the highest card in your existing hand is the one that plays.

blinds-and-button

Dealer Button and Blinds

You will come to find that there are always two aspects that remain constant at the start of each hand, namely the dealer button and the blinds. The dealer button is always located in front of the person whose turn it is.

There are two blinds in a game of poker: the big blind and the small blind. Blinds are essentially forced bets that need to be placed by the two players situated on the left of the dealer button. The small blind is always half the value of the big blind. After a completed hand, both the blinds and the dealer button move to the next available person in a counter-clockwise direction.

After you receive your two hole cards, you will need to decide whether you want to continue playing or not by evaluating your two initial cards. The player located on the left of the dealer button will decide first, followed by the rest of the players in a clockwise direction. If you choose to continue playing, you will need to match the big blind amount. However, if any player raised the bet amount before you make your decision, you will need to match the raised amount instead of the big blind.

The Flop, Turn and River

The flop refers to the three community cards that are dealt in the middle of the table. Once completing the first round of betting, three community cards will be dealt out. You are allowed to use any number of cards from the flop to form a poker hand. After the dealt flop, the second round of betting will commence.

During each betting round, each player can choose between raising, calling, checking and folding. You are only allowed to check when there are no bets involved during your turn.

Upon completing the second betting round, a fourth community card will be dealt in the middle, followed by another betting round. Finally, the fifth community card is dealt in the middle, followed by the final betting round. It is here where a showdown takes place between the remaining players.

5 Flush Five random cards in one suit
6 Straight Five consecutive cards in mixed suits
7 Three of a Kind Three of the same cards

Poker Variants

four-aces

Unsurprisingly for a game with such a rich and varied historical pedigree, there is more than one type of poker game out there. At Mr Green Casino, we have all of the top poker variants for you, as well as exclusive VIP live casino poker for our high roller players. Here are the main poker variants that you might want to try out:

  • Texas Hold ‘Em: the most commonly played poker variant, this ‘traditional’ form of poker is probably the easiest to learn. The main thing that distinguishes Texas Hold ‘Em from the rest is that there are forced wagers known as blinds at the start of a hand. Going around the table, each player must choose to either fold, raise, or call the big blind.
  • Omaha: This variant is similar to Texas Hold ‘Em with a couple of key differences. For one, all players are dealt FOUR hole cards. They must also use TWO hole cards and THREE of the community cards to build a winning hand – no exceptions.
  • 7 Card Stud: This increasingly popular form of poker involves no community cards. Instead, everyone is dealt three cards and has the option to raise with each round until a total of seven cards per player have been dealt. From this, the player must construct a winning hand.
  • 2-7 Triple Draw: Another poker variant that uses blinds but does not use community cards. 2-7 Triple Draw requires you to build the lowest poker hand at the table in order to win, making it a refreshing change from classic poker.
  • Razz: This one is similar to 7 Card Stud, except that the goal is also to get the worst (lowest) possible hand in order to win.
  • Horse: This is an immensely popular online poker variant for seasoned players in which each game consists of one of five variants, with the variant changing after each round. Across five rounds, players will play a round of Hold ‘Em, Omaha, Razz, Seven Card Stud, and Eight or Better (H-O-R-S-E).

Tips On Becoming An Advanced Poker Player

While a lot of success in poker is based on blind luck, skill and strategy are also essential to succeed. With that in mind, here are some of our top tips for poker success:

Don’t play every hand: instead of playing as many hands as possible and hoping that your bluff will always win, focus on playing only your strongest hands as aggressively as possible.

Have a strict bankroll: know exactly how much you are willing to spend and always call it quits when this has been reached.

Keep emotions out of it: when you get too emotional at the poker table, you will make stupid mistakes. Play responsibly and step back if you find yourself getting too emotional.

Know when to attack: always focus on your opponents as well as your own hand. If you see signs of weakness or uncertainty, go on the offensive and call their bluff.

Online Poker vs Live Poker

At Mr Green, you can choose from classic online poker and immersive live poker experiences, each of which has its advantages. With online poker, you are playing against a computer that uses RNG software to deal out your cards.

It is a less high-pressure environment than live poker since you are not playing alongside other people. It also means you do not have to work as hard on your bluff since you are not trying to trick a real person. This is why classic online poker can be ideal for beginner players who want to improve their skills.

Live poker is best suited to those looking for an authentic, immersive experience that feels like being in the heart of a buzzing Las Vegas casino. Live poker is all about the experience, the high stakes, and VIP privilege of a luxury gaming lounge, all in your living room
