An introduction to roulette

The game of the glamorous, the iconic and much-loved casino table game of choice—Roulette. Found in 99.99% of all casinos around the globe, Roulette comes in multiple variations and styles. From the classic versions of European, French and American, to enhanced and unique versions that can only be played online, all roulette games use the same basic play style that is simple to learn, and easy to understand. However, roulette also offers a surprising level of depth for the really serious players out there.

The earliest form of roulette is said to have been invented in a monastary in France in the 17th century. In an attempt to build a machine that would revolve endlessly without a need for energy from an outside source, a physicist failed, but a roulette wheel was born. The word roulette means “small wheel” in French.

How to play roulette

Legend has that Roulette was born in France, somewhere in the 17th century. In a bid to build the classic motion machine, a French Physicist failed with his invention, and what he got instead was a Roulette – meaning ‘the small wheel’ in French.
Over the years, this game has evolved with new features being introduced. Today, players can enjoy an online version of this classic game here at Mr Green Online Casino. The simplicity of the game and the varied betting options are unmatched.
Besides French, American and European versions, Roulette has been designed with all players in mind. Novice players can enjoy the simpler version of the game while the more advanced players can advance their gameplay by choosing to play for real money.
Playing online Roulette is pretty straightforward. A roulette consists of a table where you’ll place your bet, a spinning wheel and a ball that lands on a given position on the table. The ball decides if you’ll win the bet or not.
There are two main ways of betting on a roulette game: an inside and outside bet. Inside bets offer higher payouts but are hard to land on. Outside bets, on the other hand, are easier to land on, but with lower payouts. Inside bets include bets on single or a small group of numbers while outside bets include bets on a large group of numbers: for example, you bet on odd or even numbers, 1-18, 19-36 and colours – red or black. These are the so-called even chance bets.

Colour bet
Choose the colour of the final number and place a bet—will it be red or black? But, if the ball lands on green, the bet loses. Pays 1 to 1.

Even or odd bet
Place a bet on whether the final number is ODD or EVEN. Pays 1 to 1.

Column bets
By placing your bet in a 2:1 space, you are betting that the ball will land on one of the numbers in that long column. Pays 2 to 1.

Below the black and red columns you can place your bet on groupings of twelve numbers. Choose from the 1st 12 numbers, the 2nd 12 numbers or the 3rd 12 numbers. This pays 2 to 1.

High or low bet
Place bets on whether the number will be in the top half of the board (1 – 18), or in the lower half of the board (19 – 36). Pays 1 to 1.

Inside bets
Inside bets are wagers you can make on specific numbers or selection of numbers that have higher paying odds. Here are example of inside bets:

Straight up bet
Betting on a single number gives the biggest payout of all. Pays 31 to 1.

Split betting
Place a chip on the line between two numbers to split a bet between two numbers. Pays 17 to 1.

Street bet
Place a chip on the end of any “street” or row of three numbers to bet on all three numbers in that row. Pays 11 to 1.

Corner bet
Place a chip on the intersection of four numbers to split a bet between all four. Pays 8 to 1.

Bet on six numbers by placing the chip on the edge of two adjoining streets. This is like a double street bet. Pays 5 to 1.

Types of roulette

Over time, the game of roulette has evolved in many ways. New forms of gameplay were introduced by the Americans, bringing the advent of American roulette. It’s important to understand the core differences so you can choose the online roulette game that’s right for you.

European Roulette
Since roulette originated in France, European roulette is potentially the most authentic version of the game you can play. On a European roulette wheel, the numbers range from 0 to 36 and are distributed randomly around the wheel. With the 37 numbers, the odds of winning on a are 1 in 37 on a straight up bet. The house edge in European roulette is small, at 2.7%. That means losing in European roulette brings smaller losees than American roulette, where the house edge is 5.27%.

American Roulette
The biggest difference in American roulette is the wheel itself. In addition to the 0 on European roulette, there is also a 00 pocket. If you study an American roulette wheel, you’ll notice that the numbers are arranged in a logical order, but placed opposite one another. For example, 1 is placed across the wheel from 2. With the additional 00, the chances of winning on a single number bet are 1 in 38.

Online Roulette Playing Strategies

While Roulette is more of a luck and chance game, many players still believe that a well-thought-out roulette strategy can improve the winning odds. Some of the popular playing strategies among Roulette fans include The James Bond System, the Martingale System, and the Colors and Columns System.
The Martingale system advocates for a unique, patient and skillful gameplay where you bet on the even-money bets (chances bets) such as the black/red bets. If you win the bet, place the same bet, but if you lose, double your stake. You are supposed to play with this rhythm throughout the entire playing session, and in theory you’ll always win your original stake. This betting style needs consistency, patience and a huge bankroll – all these are required to keep playing through a losing streak.
The James Bond Strategy requires that you place your bets on different, well calculated, numbers. For example, bet €25 on the six-line bets, €70 on low numbers (1-18) and €5 on zero bets. This betting strategy could work if you stick with it for the long haul and will give you a 81.5 % winning chance on every spin.
The colors and column betting strategy is unique in its way. Here, you place a bet, for example, on a column with 8 black numbers in it and a bet on black. This will cover a third of the wheel, and if your 2-1 column bet doesn’t win, you have a 47% winning chance with the black bet; hence you’ll be breaking even on each spin.

More Roulette Bets

If you’re like most advanced players, you want to make your own strategy while enjoying the game – with each spin of the Roulette. There are a couple of advanced bets to make the play more challenging, which include the section bets (also known as French bets), and the Neighbour bets.
The latter covers 5 numbers – the main number and 2 neighbouring numbers on each side of the wheel. Neighbour bets are as a rule divided between five numbers, so a €10 neighbour bet would mean placing €2 on each number. For example ‘Zero and the neighbours by 2’ would cost €10 in total – i.e., placing €2 on the following numbers: 0, 3, 26, 32 and 15.

Section Bets

These type of bet cover bigger parts of the wheel and thye are divided into three: Voisins du Zero, Tiers du cylinder and Orphelins – often shortened to “Voisin”, “Tier” and “Orphans”.
Voisins is a 9-piece bet, with 17 numbers which cover the section around zero. The chips can be placed in any of the positions below:

2 chips placed on:

  • 0, 2, 3 corner
  • 25 to 29 corner

1 chip placed on:

  • 4/7 split
  • 12/15 split
  • 18/21 split
  • 19/22 split
  • 32/35 split

Placing a “Voisins bet by 5” will cost you in total €5×9 = € 45

Tiers du cylinder (tiers)

This is a 6-piece bet with 12 numbers in total. It’s the second-largest and covers the section opposite zero. You can place chips on any of the following positions:

1 chip on:

  • 5/8 split
  • 10/11 split
  • 13/16 split
  • 23/24 split
  • 27/30 split
  • 33/36 split

Placing a ‘tiers by 10’ will cost you in total €10×6 = €60.

Orphelins (Orphans)

This is a 5-piece bet that covers the 8 remaining numbers between voisins and tiers. It covers the smallest section, and you can place the chips on the following positions:

1 chip placed on:

  • Number 1 straight up
  • 6/9 split
  • 14/17 split
  • 17/20 split
  • 31/34 split

Placing an ‘orphans by 10’ will cost you in total €10×5 = €50.
