Halloween is on most people’s lists of top holidays during the year. What other day can a person dress up as any character of their choosing and not look like a weirdo? It gives people the chance to express themselves in a different way than they can during the rest of the year.

Halloween is one of Mr Green’s favourite holidays as well and that’s why he offers several slots to honour this spooky holidays. We’ll talk about those a little bit later but for now we’ll take a deep-dive into the details of the day itself.

The meaning of “Halloween”

No matter how old you are, you’ve probably heard of Halloween and have dressed up to commemorate the holiday at one time or another in your life, but have you ever sat down and thought about where this crazy/spooky holiday came from? As most of you may know, Halloween falls on the 31stday of October (although there are movements to get this date moved to the last Saturday in October to ensure the children have the day off from school to trick-or-treat). The word itself translates to “hallowed evening” and used to be known as “All Hallows’ Eve since it takes place on the day before All Saints Day. “Hallows” translates to “something holy” and referred to the saints.

What was the original reason for the Halloween celebration?

As we mentioned, Halloween happens on the day before All Saints Day and was a reason to celebrate the holiness of the saints but up until the 7thcentury, All Hallow’s Eve was actually celebrated on May 13. Pope Boniface IV actually changed the date during his time as Pope. The earliest mention of Halloween though is rooted in the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain which was the time of the year when the seasons changed and certain cultures felt that the gap between the spirit world and the real world was thinner during this time period which gives the day its current ‘spooky’ feel.

Modern Day Halloween Celebrations

These days it seems the religion has come out from Halloween and the holiday has become a little bit more commercialised, much like many other holidays. Some people watch scary movies to prepare and a whole genre of horror films revolves around scaring the wits out of people in the days leading up to the day.

Many people like to dress up in costumes and go to parties with friends. Children dress up and go trick-or-treating around their neighbourhoods in search of candy. A far cry from the days of celebrating saints for their piousness.

Some people decorate their houses with orange, purple and black lights and ghosts and goblins to welcome the holiday season. Others actually set up their houses as ‘haunted-houses’ and welcome neighbourhood children (if they dare!) for a chance to be scared by people dressed like ghosts, goblins and monsters who pop out and grab them.

Another Halloween tradition is the Jack-o-Lantern pumpkin. A pumpkin is a gourd whose optimal growing season is typically in mid-fall or around when Halloween begins. Because of the timing, and the shape of the pumpkins being conducive to carving, many people have taken to pumpkin-carving as a way to celebrate the holiday. People usually go to a pumpkin-patch and pick out a pumpkin for their children. They go and carve a scary face into the pumpkin and put it on their porch, complete with flickering candle inside and at night time the pumpkin becomes a scary jack o’ lantern.

Trick or treating is probably the most prevalent Halloween tradition there is, with children dressing up like a ghost, goblin, super-hero or cartoon character and going door-to-door in search of different types of candy and goodies.

No matter how you choose to celebrate Halloween one thing is for sure, it is here to stay and seems to only be growing in popularity.
